Solidarity in Crisis: China’s All-Out Support for Myanmar’s Earthquake Relief
2025-04-01 22:30

In the wake of Myanmar’s catastrophic March 28 earthquake, China, as the “pauk-phaw” brother and friendly neighbor, feels for the people of Myanmar over the disaster and swiftly mobilized rescue and relief efforts. In total, 28 government and civilian rescue teams comprised of over 600 people, have been deployed to the affected areas. Additionally, China pledged RMB one billion in humanitarian aid, with the first batch of 1,200 tents, 8,000 blankets, and 40,000 first-aid kits arriving on March 31. Southwest China’s Yunnan provincial government acted just in three hours of the quake, dispatching RMB 5 million worth of emergency supplies, including medical kits, food, tents, foldable beds, mosquito nets, and disease prevention materials. Meanwhile, Dehong Prefecture of Yunnan donated RMB 1.1 million worth of medicine and relief items. To facilitate swift assistance, a special cross-border clearance mechanism has been activated, ensuring 24-hour customs operations and a “green channel” for relief shipments.

In addition to government aid, Chinese civil organizations, businesses, and individuals have contributed donations and relief supplies to aid Myanmar’s recovery efforts. The Red Cross Society of China has donated RMB 1.5 million to the Myanmar Red Cross Society, along with 300 tents, 2,000 blankets, 600 foldable beds, and emergency kits for 2,000 displaced families. The Red Cross Society of Yunnan Province has collected RMB 920,000 in donations and RMB 300,000 worth of supplies, which are now being transported to affected areas. Additionally, the General Association of Dian Entrepreneurs has contributed over RMB 1 million in medical supplies, much of which has already been delivered to survivors.

Chinese institutions, businesses, and volunteers in Myanmar have taken an active role in relief efforts. The China Foundation for Rural Development’s Myanmar office has distributed relief packages to 1,000 affected households in Mandalay and Nay Pyi Taw. The Myanmar Chinese Chamber of Commerce has raised MMK 1 billion in donations and MMK 1.5 billion worth of supplies, which are now reaching survivors. Companies like CITIC Myanmar have also been delivering urgently needed supplies. Meanwhile, Chinese corporate employees in Myanmar have volunteered to assist with translation, logistics, and support services. A Chinese university has rapidly developed a DeepSeek-driven Chinese-Myanmar-English translation system, while a network of global Chinese volunteers has been collecting distress signals and mapping real-time disaster updates in three languages to assist rescue teams.

As Myanmar grapples with the aftermath of the earthquake, China’s swift and extensive relief efforts in Myanmar reflect a deep sense of solidarity. This is our way of showing our deep “pauk-phaw” friendship and commitment to the vision of China-Myanmar community with a shared future.
