Friendly Organizations and Individuals in Myanmar Reaffirm Support for the One-China Principle
2024-05-20 13:09

On May 16, Dr. Zheng Zhihong, Minister Counselor of the Embassy of China in Myanmar visited U Tin Oo, Chairman of the Myanmar-China Friendship Association. They reviewed the long history of friendly relations between China and Myanmar, including the founding documents of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

Dr. Zheng Zhihong congratulated U Tin Oo on assuming his new role as Chairman of the Myanmar-China Friendship Association and noted that China and Myanmar are linked by mountains and rivers, and that the pauk-phaw friendship between the two countries has stood the test of time. The two sides have always had mutual understanding and support on issues involving their respective core interests and major concerns. We expressed our appreciation for Myanmar’s firm adherence to the one-China principle. The ongoing tensions in the Taiwan Strait are primarily due to the Taiwan Democratic Progressive Party authority seeking “independence” with support from the United States, while some forces in the U.S. are trying to use Taiwan to contain China. The Taiwan question is at the very core of China’s core interests. The one-China principle is the foundation for China to establish and maintain diplomatic relations with countries worldwide, including Myanmar. This principle is a basic norm in international relations and a universal consensus of the international community. We believe that Myanmar will firmly adhere to the one-China principle in the process of developing China-Myanmar friendly relations and continue to nurture and deepen the pauk-phaw friendship between China and Myanmar.

U Tin Oo said, Myanmar has always upheld the one-China principle and publicly vocalized its support for China on many occasions. The diplomatic relations mutually established by Myanmar and China is   on the political basis of respect for each other’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Five Principles of Peaceful Co-Existence. Myanmar and China have always been staunch advocates for these Principles and are committed to advancing the essence of such Principles. I would like to reiterate once again that Myanmar firmly adheres to the one-China principle. After the meeting, the two sides reviewed historical photos of the friendly exchanges between the two countries.

On the same day, the Acting Director of the Information and Public Affairs Section of the Embassy of China in Myanmar met with representatives from major Myanmar media outlets, including MRTV, MITV, Myanmar Alin, Global New Light of Myanmar, Standard Time Daily, Swe Myo Pauk Phaw Magazine, and Myanmar Insider, to review the original principles of establishing diplomatic relations and elaborate China’s stance on the Taiwan question. Myanmar media representatives expressed their firm support for the one-China principle and their commitment to accurately reporting on the Taiwan question to the Myanmar public. Journalists from Xinhua News Agency and People’s Daily in Myanmar also participated in these activities.
