China and Myanmar are friendly neighbours linked by mountains and rivers, and the traditional friendship between the two peoples enjoys a profound history. Since ancient times, the people of the two countries have known each other as "Phauphaw". On 8 June 1950, the two countries formally established diplomatic relations. In the 1950s, China and Myanmar jointly advocated the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence. In the 1960s, the two countries, in the spirit of friendly consultation and mutual understanding and accommodation, successfully resolved the border issues left over by history, setting an example for the resolution of border issues between countries. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, China-Myanmar relations have been developing steadily. In January 2020, the leaders of the two countries agreed to work together to build a community with a shared future.
